The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recently voted to set a drinking water standard of 70ppt for PFAS chemicals. This is far more lenient than the recommended 20ppt, and has been a cause for conflict within decision-makers. PFAS, also known as ‘forever chemicals’, have been linked to many health issues. A recent study found correlation between PFAS and reduced affect from vaccines. The 70ppt limit was called a “good compromise” according to former chair Dr. Fred Prehn. The conflict largely hinged on concerns over the cost of setting a more stringent limit.
Board members who preferred the 20ppt limit relented to their peers’ arguments, but made it known that they thought the effort could be ineffective. Public figures had similar feelings, and expressed their disagreement when addressing the board. The Chair of the town of Peshtigo, Cindy Boyle, argued the need for limitations, herself having elevated levels of PFAS from the untreated drinking water. Public concern over the forever chemicals continues to rise, and a divide has formed between government officials. The future for Wisconsin water is uncertain, but advocates for water quality continue to fight.
