There are few worse places to discover lead contamination than in elementary school drinking fountains. Kids love to stop at these fountains on their way to and from class to grab a quick drink and revitalize themselves. This leads to a chance of prolonged exposure for children until we become aware of the issue. A contaminated drinking fountain is not only hazardous for people in general, but especially for developing children. In the Waterloo region, they found lead levels nearing and exceeding the acceptable level in their school drinking fountains. This has caused some uproar amongst parents but the school board continues to assure the public that action is being taken.
In a statement to The Record, principal Dennis Haid spoke plainly about the matter. “We will continue to work on corrective measures until we meet the provincially set standards”. He went on to promise more effective communication with the public and to keep parents in the loop. The Waterloo school district plans to flush all of their drinking fountains at the end of each day with hopes to protect their students from potential infection. In total, 12 schools had lead levels exceeding provincial standards. Now all that is left to do is encourage the school board to protect their children and clean their fountains.
