63 wells in Fairfield, Maine tested for high levels of PFA’s, or ‘forever chemicals’, in the drinking water. Maine is currently the state with the largest ongoing investigation in regards to PFA’s, with rapidly growing levels of chemicals being found in the water. The source of these chemicals comes from sludge, which is used as fertilizer. The sludge transferred the chemicals into the dirt, and was further spread by stormwater run-off. The EPA is investigating whether the contaminated water is local or state-wide. Residents of Fairfield have expressed much concern about the related side effects of PFA’s. 19 more wells outside of Somerset county have tested positive for PFA’s as well. Town officials are working on providing clean water to those affected by expanding public water down Route 201 and installing filtration systems in the homes of affected residents.
