In honor of National Water Quality Month (which the EPA designated to be every August), Plumber magazine recently published an informative article to help plumbers better address customer questions and concerns related to water quality. With so many PFAS and lead contamination stories in the news these days, more homeowners are turning to plumbers for help filtering their water.
Here are some key point highlighted in the article:
- With greater water contamination concerns, more homeowners may be interested in Point-of-Entry (PoE) water filtration systems. It’s important for plumbers to be knowledgeable about these systems and know how to install them.
- Suggest to the customer that the best first step is to determine what’s in their water since different filters remove different things. They can do this by having their water tested or, if they get their water from a public water system (as opposed to a private well), by getting a copy of their Consumer Confidence Report.
- A few things to keep in mind when installing a PoE water filtration system include: (1) install the filter before other appliances such as water heaters or water softeners; (2) most filters can be installed using compression or push fittings; and (3) be sure to leave enough space so the homeowner can easily change the filter.
- Make sure any water filtration system you recommend is certified effective by an independent third party, such as NSF International
