The Federal Crackdown on PFAS

Since they went into production in the 1940’s, PFAS have slowly seeped into the United States’ water systems and created health problems for its population. It took almost 80 years for the nation to truly understand the danger posed by these forever chemicals. The first state to set a maximum contaminant limit (MCL) for PFAS was New Jersey in 2018. Since then, it’s been six long years waiting for a true national limit.

That wait ended in April of 2024, when the EPA and federal government came together to issue a plan that not only set a MCL for the country, but provides funds to reduce the presence of PFAS in water systems. $9 billion of federal funds have been set towards water treatment, monitoring, and infrastructure changes. It is but one step on the EPA’s roadmap towards national water health, but it is a historical change that is sure to lead to healthier drinking water throughout the country.
