Discovering lead contamination within a community’s water pipes is a harrowing experience, and it can only be made worse by miscommunication. This is the case for the population of Syracuse, New York. After a study of pipes across the community revealed that one-in-ten homes had lead-contaminated water, tensions quickly rose. This involved a visit from the Washington Post, and multiple employees who were involved with the study being placed on leave.
Officials retested the homes that reported high contaminant levels and insisted that the original study was not entirely accurate. However, some have lobbied suspicions that these results are being downplayed as a nonissue. It creates a cacophony of opinion as multiple groups push different perspectives on the study and it leaves the population of Syracuse with a severely mixed message.
