The CDC has established a fellowship of organizations that will study the health consequences of polyfluoroalkyl substances in drinking water. One of these members is the Silent Spring Institute, who has begun the investigation in Eastern Massachusetts. Partnering with Harvard, Eastern Research Group, they will focus on two areas. Hyannis, near Cape Cod where Harvard students previously investigated the presence of PFAS, and the town of Ayer. Both communities have dealt with PFAS contamination in their water sources, and the study will focus on the local health impacts.
The Silent Spring announced the goals of the study would be as follows: Evaluate blood samples from the communities, identify impacts on child behavior, and reproduction effects in both communities. Determine how PFAS increases susceptibility to other diseases, and how it affects bodily chemicals. All participants will be providing samples of blood and urine, and fill out a cognitive assessment. The study hopes to identify how each community is impacted by these “forever chemicals”.
