On May 4, President Obama made a visit to Flint, Michigan, to address the community’s continued concerns with its drinking water (you can view his speech in its entirety here or read the transcript from the White House). In his speech, the President discussed the need for the government to replace the city’s corroded pipes that led to the water-contamination crisis.
He also addressed the need and importance of home water filtration as the community waits for pipes to be replaced, saying: “…although I understand the fear and concern that people have, and it is entirely legitimate, what the science tells us at this stage is you should not drink any of the water that is not filtered. But if you get the filter and use it properly, that water can be consumed.”
Following the speech, Water Quality Association (WQA) President Don McGhee sent an Official Letter to the White House offering to provide certified filters and related technologies, along with professional advice and education, to help Flint residents use and maintain the water filters. He also issued a statement from the WQA, saying:
“President Obama is correct; everyone has the right to safe drinking water, and filtered water is the answer in Flint. Numerous communities across the United States are negatively impacted by the presence of naturally occurring or man-made contaminants in their water sources…
The three essential take-away tips for residents concerned about their water are: get your water tested by a certified water testing laboratory; consult with a certified water treatment professional, and; when selecting a water treatment solution, look for certified products with validated claims.”
