The community of Pittsboro discovered a dangerous amount of PFAS in their local river which provides drinking water to the entire area. In response to this, officials founded a task force with the goal of creating an action plan to combat this new threat. One member of that group was Katie Bryant, a former microbiologist in the community who had been affected by the chemicals. With her help, the task force created a list of short-term and long-term solutions throughout the peak of the COVID pandemic.
The long-term solution proposed by the task force was a strong one, but one that would take time. They recommended the construction of a water treatment facility to protect Pittsboro and other nearby communities. The only catch was that such a facility would not be put into operation until 2031. In the meantime, filtration systems have become the preferred method of securing water quality. As plans for a water treatment plant move forward, perhaps the Pittsboro area can find a way to ensure safe drink water for all residents.
