A bill that would require the EPA to set regulations for PFAS compounds passed through the House in late July. This PFAS limit-setting bill has the potential to set the nation on a united path to protection from the forever chemicals. The bill requires the cleaning of contamination sites and pledges to reimburse agencies for the process. According to the Los Angeles Times the deadline for the EPA to establish regulations is in 2025. One year later the EPA will be required to set standards for the use of PFAS compounds.
However, precedent does not look kindly on the bill, as a similar effort in 2020 failed in the Senate. Opinions within the House of Representatives were already split on the matter, with a small group of Republicans favoring the bill. Democrats frame the bill as a necessary step towards regulation of the chemical. Republicans, on the other hand, view it as an nonspecific dangerous idea that could ban other valuable chemicals. We now await to see if the bill proves more successful than its predecessor.
