Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf recently announced a program for local schools to investigate their drinking water for lead contamination. He states that his hope is for this program to provide a benchmark necessary to approach the issue and solve it. This comes as a part of Wolf’s Lead-Free PA initiative that commenced in mid-2019. Additionally, the program is funded by an EPA grant. The grant will allow Pennsylvania schools to test their water for lead at no cost to the school. The program also includes free training in technical support to ensure proper testing across the board.
The next step in this plan is to approach schools and childcare facilities with lead contamination and clear the source. Wolf urged the legislature to pass funding for abatement of these chemicals that cannot be provided by the EPA grant. The Governor stated, “I encourage our child care centers and schools to avail themselves of this free program.” Further information on this program is linked at the end of his announcement.
