The Albany Times Union recently reported that the cities of Albany, Schenectady, Troy are among areas in New York state receiving grants to help pay for the replacement of old lead pipes that pose potential drinking water risks. All told, those three cities will receive $1.6 million in grants.
The New York Health Department is awarding a total of $20 million in grants to cities throughout the state to replace lead pipes. In this statement, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said: “With this $20 million award, we are helping to protect residents and their families across this state and are creating a stronger, healthier New York.”
With many stories emerging about water contamination from lead pipes following the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, more and more states are taking preventative action to replace pipes and ensure the safety of drinking water.
