According to this August 13 report from the Capital Gazette, 19 public schools in the Maryland county of Anne Arundel have “unacceptably high levels of lead in their water”. The presence of lead was revealed through testing conducted under a new state law.
Here is some other information revealed in the article:
- 71 water outlets at Glen Burnie High School tested above 20 parts per billion (ppb)
- A county spokesman said water has been shut off anywhere there were elevated lead levels
- A new law passed last year required all Maryland schools built before 1988 to test for lead in water
This is just the latest example of the increasing nationwide problem of lead contaminating water in homes, businesses, and schools. These continuing problems have even led Elon Musk to commit to help the people of Flint, Michigan—a state that recently passed the strictest lead drinking water standards in the U.S.
