The EPA allowed representatives from Flint and Detroit, Michigan to recount the experiences of their cities and lead contamination. They hope to use these testimonies to better inform the revision of the Lead and Copper Rule. The EPA’s senior advisor to the Office of Water commented on the relationship between community and government. “Strong local, state and federal partnerships are helping Flint to move forward and strengthen the community”. Senator Debbie Stabenow reminded the gathering of the countless other Michigan communities who have also battled with lead contamination.
The Michigan Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich commented on the sad events that transpired in Flint. “Because Flint residents unknowingly drank, bathed in and cooked with lead-contaminated water, we have regrettably become experts in lead contamination”. Further speakers attributed their thoughts to the matter, and encouraged heavy revisions to the LCR. Having been created in 1991, the rule is in dire need of updating. Hopefully the testimonies from these impacted individuals will sway the EPA to make the necessary changes.
