At the end of a case that began in 2017, two companies are being held liable for the damages caused to properties and well-owners by their negligence around PFAS. The two companies in question are Wolverine Worldwide and 3M. Wolverine Worldwide is a shoe manufacturer that utilizes the forever chemical in their production process, and 3M is a notorious organization manufacturing chemicals that has been tied up in many court cases due to their impact on U.S. water quality.
The settlement that was agreed upon covers around 1,700 properties that were impacted by a PFAS dump by Wolverine in 2017. It is slated to provide property owners in the area with $54 million in damages. The dispersal of damages will be dependent on the number of people in each household, as well as the amount of contaminants that were found in their water. This is another step from the U.S. legal system in holding chemical companies accountable for turning lives upside down by knowingly allowing PFAS chemicals to reach public and private sources.
