The city of Benton Harbor has been trapped with lead contaminated water for almost half a decade. This error has come largely by the fault of its state government of Michigan. The state had ignored the issue for three years, until the EPA stepped in. As the federal agency began to place requirements for healthier drinking water, the state finally came off from the bench. This has involved plans to replace lead pipes throughout the city, and providing clean drinking water.
However, citizens of Benton Harbor think it may not be enough. Due to the longevity of the contamination, it has simply slipped from some citizens’ minds. City officials urge the state government to issue a state of emergency in order to remind residents of the danger. The replacement of lead water lines will take years, as will the EPA’s other methods, so it is critical that those living in Benton Harbor remain aware of their water quality.
