State funds have long invested in testing water quality in public schools, and this has helped officials learn that there are gaps in water quality protection for students. However, very little has been invested in the preventative measures that would actually impact water quality within these schools. Due to this, a recent national exam found that more than half of the states completely fail their water examinations in schools.
Many of these failures were due to old lead pipes in the water systems that have gone decades without being replaced. These outdated systems often crop up in rural and urban areas, and often are ignored when it comes time to make repairs to infrastructure. However these gaps can have disastrous consequences as children often suffer the effects of contaminated water worse than adults. Hopefully this examination period will serve as a wake-up call to states and remind them of the necessity to protect the next generation from these contaminants.
