Representatives from Maine united in the effort to pass a legislation that would enact stricter PFAS restrictions. This stems from the numerous discoveries of PFAS made within the state. From dairy farms to drinking wells, the breadth of contamination has been reflective of the struggles in other states. The difference comes in the response, where Maine’s new legislation has lowered the safe contaminant level to 20 parts per trillion. That is lower than almost any limit in the nation.
There have been talks of signing another bill that would restrict PFAS-containing firefighting foams. A third option would require manufacturers to disclose any use of the forever chemicals. The foremost public health officer in Maine, Dr. Lani Graham, has encouraged phasing out PFAS entirely. She told Bangor Daily News “if you keep pumping chemicals into the environment, it’s not going to mean a lot”. This puts Maine at the tip of the spear, fighting to erase forever chemicals from their memory.
