Since 2014, The city of Flint, Michigan has had a critical issue with lead in their water supply. However, an article published by Michigan Radio NPR shows that the water supplies in other Michigan communities also contain high levels of lead. This discovery was made when Michigan adopted a new Lead and Copper Rule in 2018. This rule requires cities to perform more water tests and test high-risk homes. In addition to this, the new rule also requires cities to replace all lead service lines by the year of 2020. Michigan Radio NPR, states that if a city were to fail this new rule they must:
- Notify residents
- Do more comprehensive tests of their water supply
If cities cannot bring the amount of lead under the Federal Action Level, they must replace lead service lines at a rate of 7% per year. Which is a 2% increase of the federal baseline of 5% per year.
