The EPA seeks to delay the Lead and Copper Rule Revision compliance date until October 16, 2024. The revision itself will be completed within the year, giving the nation three years to prepare. The Lead and Copper Rule has not been updated in decades, and the current state of water quality in the U.S necessitates a change. The requirements will be known on December 16th, 2021. This allows the EPA to have time to effectively conduct consultations. This investigation included conversations with representatives from Flint Michigan.
The delay also ensures that public water systems will be ready to comply with all of the requirements. The grace period is essential for the systems to make infrastructure changes, as they are so-time consuming and expensive. It also guarantees that these water systems will all be actively improving their water quality over the three years. Hopefully as the compliance date approaches, lead pipes will be a thing of the past.
