Residents in West Des Moines discovered traces of PFAS in their water. The discovery came courtesy of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, who had been assessing the threat posed by PFAS. The primary types of forever chemicals discovered in Des Moines wells were PFOA and PFOS. Fortunately, the contamination levels are below the advisory levels, but any trace of these contaminants can spell danger.
The well containing the highest level of PFAS was shut down, but the community continues to wrestle with uncertainty regarding 18 untested wells nearby. Officials at the University of Iowa warn that the scope of contamination is not yet fully understood. While the EPA continues to reassess PFAS policy, Des Moines must proceed with caution.
