The Illinois governor signed legislation meant to clean up the lead service lines in Chicago and other population centers. Known as ‘The Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act’, it will require the replacement of all faulty lines. They anticipate the work involved in this project will create approximately 11,000 jobs. The state currently contains 12.5% of all lead service lines in the country. These lead lines are found in many low-income areas, and have become an area of contempt for citizens.
Illinois American Water stated that they understand the magnitude of this undertaking in a statement to CIProud. “[We recognize] the need for continuous investment in essential water infrastructure, specifically replacing lead water service lines.” They are investing more than $10 million to improve the local water system. The plan will commence at the beginning of the New Year, 2022.
