A recent article from Harvard Health Publication authored by Mallika Marshall, MD, discusses some findings from a new study in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics. That study reveals what many Americans already know but too often choose to ignore…
Drinking water, plain water, is just plain good for you.
The study, which looked at data on the eating and drinking habits of over 18,000 adults over a two-day period, found:
- 4.2 cups is the amount of plain water participants drank on average per day
- 2,157 calories is the average number of calories participants consumed per day (in both food and drink)
- 125 calories on average came from sweetened beverages
- Participants who drank the most plain water consumed fewer total calories, drank fewer sweetened beverages, and took in less total fat, saturated fat, sugar, salt, and cholesterol
- 1-3 cups increase in plain water intake each day can decrease your calorie intake by 68-205 calories
The basic conclusion here…
If you want to be healthier and take off some pounds, drinking water in place of beverages like soda, sugary juices, energy drinks, and even higher-calorie flavored waters is a great place to start.
While the costs of bottled water can add up, consider tap water as a healthy, low-cost alternative. With tap water quality issues on the minds of many Americans these days, water filters can help ensure the health and safety of your drinking water—so you can drink more of it, and live a healthier lifestyle!
