Water Quality Products (WQP) magazine recently reported on a new study from the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which found 170 million+ Americans have radium in treated drinking water.
The report also found public water system data from 2010 through 2015 found:
- Over 22,000 systems had traces of radium
- 158 systems in 27 states had radium above the federal legal limit
- In Texas approximately 80% of the state population was served by public water
In the article, WQP notes that radium has been linked to cancer and quotes Alexi Temkin, a EWG toxicologist, as saying, “It has been associated with increases in bone cancer. So exposure to radium… even low levels, may increase the risk of cancer development.”
