In March 2021, 205 tons of nitrogen were spilled into Tampa Bay. This comes as one more crisis in a building list of water quality issues in the state of Florida. The bay already had issues with different seagrass beds that scientists looked to solve, but now things have changed. Seagrass beds near the spill were amongst the healthy wildlife and are now in more danger than the rest. Local officials are hoping to rally their community to take action and save Tampa Bay.
A professor of marine science told ABC News that “if you live in Florida—you’re part of the problem”. The water contamination in Florida comes from residential properties, businesses and more. With rampant contamination, it is important for citizens to work to protect their drinking water. 1000 Friends of Florida is a non-profit that has been focusing on improving the water quality of their local waterways. They cite 2020 as a painful year where they were unable to accomplish as much as they would have liked, but now it’s 2021. The organization is meeting again and plans to look into sources of contamination and create a better future for the next generation.
