The U.S. Geological survey conducted a study using predictive modeling to estimate how widespread PFAS contamination has grown. This study does not account for the amount of PFAS in any water source simply the breadth of its reach. According to the EPA, PFAS are hazardous contaminants in any quantity. Therefore, this study gives a reasonable estimate of how many people could be exposed at this moment.
The study revealed that over 20% of the United States is currently exposed to forever chemicals. This could be through groundwater contamination, or the chemical seeping into private wells. The bright side to this study is that it provides health organizations with a road map. A road map that can guide them on where to sample for contaminants and lend aid. While citizens wait for that aid, filtration systems will be the best defense against PFAS.
