Every March for the past nine years the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) WaterSense Program has held “Fix a Leak Week”. The purpose of “Fix a Leak Week” is to encourage people to take action to find and fix household water leaks, which lead to a lot of wasted water.
Just how much wasted water? According to the EPA:
- Minor water leaks account for more than 1 trillion gallons of wasted water each year
- A leaky faucet dripping at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year
- 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons of water or more per day
It’s a smart idea for every homeowner to take the opportunity to check for water leaks in toilets, faucets, and showerheads. Not only do leaks waste water, they cost homeowners money. The WaterSense website provides information on how to determine if you have a leak, along with some common leak causes and how to fix them.
This year’s “Fix a Leak Week” will be held from March 20-26 (though WaterSense notes any time is a good time to fix a leak). WaterSense seeks to protect the future of our nation’s water supply by offering people a simple way to use less water with water-efficient products, new homes, and services.
