As the U.S Environmental Protection Agency strives to arm the nation with tools against PFAS the first step involves developing a better understanding of the forever chemicals. To achieve this, the EPA has established the Fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 5). This rule will establish monitoring of 29 types of PFAS as well as lithium in drinking water sources.
The EPA Administrator, Michael Reagan, stated the following in a news release: “monitoring (is) necessary to protect all communities from PFAS”. This rule will collect data on PFAS that will allow the EPA to develop an understanding of how prevalent PFAS are in the nation. They will also have an easier time conducting state and regional assessments of contamination.
