Across many districts in the state of Colorado, contaminated drinking water has been a prevalent and increasing issue for residents. In CBS Denver’s report, many drinking water sources within these districts have been tested for PFOA/PFOS contamination and what they found was shocking. Even though there is no federal limit to the contamination level of these chemicals, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends a level no more than 70 parts per trillion. Out of the 400 water districts tested, 13 water systems were found with higher than normal contamination levels of these “forever chemicals”. This is cause for worry for those who use these water systems as continued exposure to PFOA/PFOS can cause negative health effects.
When asked about the contamination, John Putnam, a previous director of environment programs for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, he stated that “at this point we don’t believe they should be concerned.” Putnam has been a part of an effort to test many of the drinking water sources across districts in Colorado. He continued to say “If people are still concerned, they can look at options for themselves.”
