Consumer Reports, an independent, nonprofit organization working on behalf of consumers’ interests, recently published this informative post with tips for keeping your water safe at home. The post provides these steps for cleaning up your drinking water:
1. Know where your water comes from – The first step is finding out what contaminants you need to filter. If you have a water bill, you have access to an annual Consumer Confidence Report detailing what’s in your water. Learn more about accessing your Consumer Confidence Report here.
2. Get your water tested – If you have lead pipes, live in an older home, or have well water, you may want to have your water tested to find out what’s in it. Consumer Reports notes: “Some state and local health departments offer free test kits. Check the EPA’s website for local testing labs or call its Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.”
3. Identify the right filter – Once you know what you need to filter out, you can choose a filter that does just that. If you’re using a point-of-use filter, make sure you select one that states it filters the specific contaminants you want out of your water. To filter all the water in your home, consider a point of entry water filtration system.
