In the US, the constant treatment and testing of water supplies is essential. It ensures they remain safe and healthy for people to drink. Is there additional testing and treatment for our water on the way? Yes, thanks to the introduction of the Providing Financial Assistance to States for Testing and Treatment Act of 2020. According to an article by The Hill, On March 12th this bill was passed to combat the issue of “Forever Chemicals” in U.S. water supplies. The bill specifically allows the Environmental Protection Agency to improve each of their water programs and to help remove harmful PFAS from water supplies across the U.S.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen expressed her excitement for the bill in a statement “This new legislation is an important step to help meet that goal by delivering robust federal resources to states to invest in remediation so we can quickly and efficiently clean our drinking water supplies when contamination is detected,”. A total of $20 billion will be set aside for the bill and is a significant increase in combating PFAS. A majority of this sum will be given to the EPA and then will be given to the states themselves. A representative from the American Water Works Association stated how these funds may be used. “the bigger need may be in removing lead service lines, finding a better source of water or simply replacing aging infrastructure”.
