The Naval Research Laboratory in Chesapeake Bay recently discovered PFAS contamination within and outside its fences. This and 300 other military bases have the forever chemical leaking from their grounds. One local farm had to beg the base to test their water, as the local well used on that firm was in proximity of the base. Wells that are on the base detected PFAS contaminants up to 175,000 parts per trillion, an extreme amount.
Nearby streams have been contaminated as well, all far-exceeding common contaminant limits. The chemicals have gone as far to infect local sea life, creating a potential danger for fishermen in the area. Locals have become impatient with the endless studies conducted by the government, and demand change. David Harris, a local landowner, told the Bay Journal that he understands the cleaning process must be extremely difficult. He followed by saying “[but] shouldn’t they be responsible for damming it, filtering it, and then passing it back again?” Harris’ family worries for their health, having lived next to a contaminated site for so long. As PFAS contamination becomes commonplace, one wonders what the government will do to protect these citizens.
