With the federal government still working on their official ruling regarding maximum contaminant limits for PFAS, states must fend for themselves when it comes to monitoring, regulation, and treatment. Arizona has dedicated $3 million of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act towards a campaign to test all of the state’s water systems for the forever chemicals, after discovering dangerous levels in 57 water systems already.
Military bases throughout Arizona have been found to leak PFAS into nearby water sources from their fire-fighting foams. These affected communities can be assisted with treatment measures, but state officials have quickly discovered that the costs associated make widespread treatment a difficult dream to realize. In addition to that, without a federal mandate all testing is voluntary, leaving the testing for contaminants up to the whim of those running the water systems. There is a lot of ground to cover, but Arizona is taking the first steps towards progress.
