While most public water systems are required by law to perform frequent testing for contamination, school systems have no such requirement. This means that in order to obtain sufficient testing to protect children, states must find a way themselves. Alabama had a system in place for testing drinking water in schools from 2017-2019 that was unfortunately shut down – until now. Thanks to an EPA grant, the campaign has been renewed, and water sources in schools across the state will resume testing. This is a part of the EPA “3Ts for Reducing Lead in Drinking Water” program. The program takes the pressure of payment off of the schools, and encourages open communication with families on the results. The return of this Alabama program eases the minds of many parents in the state, and will no doubt be invaluable in protecting children’s health.
